At North Seattle Transmission, we don't just regard automotive transmissions as part of our 9-to-5 job. Rather, we're truly enthusiastic about our field and always love to learn more about it. At our local transmission shop, we're happy to go into great detail in discussing and explaining transmission matters. Here are five fun facts about automotive transmissions.
A Small Minority of Americans Can Drive a Stick Shift
As automatic transmissions have become more and more common, a decreasing amount of people know how to operate a manual transmission. A 2018 study indicated that a mere 18% of American drivers know how to drive a stick shift.
The First Mass-Produced Automatic Transmission was Released in 1939
In the interwar years, there was significant advancement in automotive technology. In 1939, this culminated in GM's release of vehicles featuring the HydraMatic gearbox, which was the first automatic-style transmission that was made widely available to the public. This transmission was made for both Cadillac and Oldsmobile models.
Manual Transmissions No Longer Always Get Better Gas Mileage
Historically, manual transmissions have gotten more MPGs than their automatic counterparts. But advances in automatic transmission technology have changed the game. Now, automatic transmissions often get the same or even better gas mileage than the same models that have stick shifts.
The Preselector Gearbox
Between the 1930s and 1950s, the "preselect" transmission became quite popular. With this transmission, drivers would choose the gear to which they wanted to shift before actually engaging the clutch pedal. Then once stepping on the clutch pedal, the transmission would automatically shift to the gear that was preselected.
There's a Specific License for Driving a Manual in the U.K.
In the United Kingdom, if drivers want to legally operate a car with a manual transmission, they must first pass a driving test in a vehicle that has a stick shift.
